Everyday baby care, one step at a time
Prepare for nappy changes, bathing, clothes and cord care without buying more than you need.
2 minute read · A small idea to try
This is general educational information and does not replace professional medical advice. Follow your healthcare team's individual guidance and contact them with concerns about you or your child.
Set up before you begin
Gather the supplies you need within reach. A clean, safe floor-level changing space can reduce fall risk. Keep your attention on your baby during care and wash your hands. If you have to move away, take your baby with you or place them somewhere safe.
Keep bathing simple
Ask your care team to demonstrate bathing and holding your baby safely. Prepare water and a towel first, check the water temperature, and keep a hand on your baby throughout. Never leave a baby alone in water, even briefly or in a bath seat. Plain water is recommended for a newborn's delicate skin.
Clothes and cord care
Choose easy-to-change clothes and avoid overheating. Keep the cord stump clean and dry, following the instructions you were given after birth. Do not add powders or creams unless a healthcare professional advises you to. Ask about redness, discharge or a smell that concerns you.
Make the next change easier
Your useful checklist can be just a clean nappy, appropriate cleaning supplies, spare clothes and a safe place to put your baby. Before buying something else, ask whether it solves a real need. If your baby was premature or has a medical condition, use the individual care instructions from their team.
One thing to take with you
Prepare what you need first, stay with your baby, and ask for a demonstration whenever it helps.
