Offer an invitation

Choose a safe, age-appropriate material and make room for your child’s idea. A large box might become a shop, a vehicle or a place to tell stories. The activity does not need to resemble an example picture. Stay nearby and remove staples, sharp edges or small parts that are unsuitable for your child.

Let the idea change

You can ask what the child wants to try next without directing every step. Some children prefer watching before joining in; others move quickly to something new. Keep cleanup manageable by offering only a few materials. The goal is time spent exploring together, not a finished craft.

Try it in a small way

1. Choose a large sheet of paper or a safe empty box.
2. Ask, ‘What could this become?’ and wait for an idea.
3. Join one small part of the story if invited.
4. Let the child help decide what to keep and what to recycle.
